While two German brothers were the first to hold public film screenings, the Lumière brothers were the first to commercially screen films. One of their most famous films, Arrivée d’un train (à la Ciotat), premiered on Dec. 28, 1895. As such, feel free to celebrate every Dec. 28th with a film viewing! Another interesting fact is that the 1st movie theater opened in the basement of the Grand Café in Paris.

Key additions that still exist today because of the two brothers:

  • 35mm film width
  • 16 fps exposure rate
  • the word “cinema” and the word “cinematography”, i.e., shooting a film
